After 12-Year Run, Sun Sets on Paddle at the Park
After long and difficult consideration, the Destin Chamber's Board of Directors has decided to cancel Paddle at the Park, bringing an end to its 12-year run. The event was also cancelled in 2020 due to Covid. Created to help draw tourists to the area, promote a trendy new sport, and partner with home-grown paddleboard manufacturer BOTE, the event drew close to 175 paddlers at the outset. The 12th Annual Paddle at the Park Sponsored by HCA Florida Destin Emergency will take place in the Gulf of Mexico behind The Boardwalk on Okaloosa Island on Saturday, May 11, 2024. This standup paddleboard race features 1- and 3-mile recreational races, a 6-mile elite race and a kids' fun out-and-back paddle. United Way Emerald Coast Partners with Okaloosa County School District
The Okaloosa County School District has partnered with the United Way Emerald Coast to help build a foundation of early literacy, social-emotional development, and mentorship. ReadingPals is a statewide early literacy initiative that provides volunteer mentors for local students from voluntary prekindergarten to third grade who may need extra help. Once a mentor passes their background screening, they undergo training before getting placed in a classroom where they work at a 1:2 ratio. For more
