Okaloosa County Schools to Celebrate the Legacy of President Jimmy Carter in the Classroom

President Jimmy Carter, who served from 1977 to 1981, passed away on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100. An executive order issued by President Joe Biden on Monday, Dec. 30, designates a National Day of Mourning to honor President Carter's legacy.

The Okaloosa County School District will remain open on Thursday, Jan. 9, including Eglin Elementary School, located on Eglin Air Force Base. Superintendent Marcus Chambers emphasized the district's commitment to honoring President Carter's legacy: "President Jimmy Carter was a remarkable leader and humanitarian whose life of service exemplified integrity, compassion, and dedication to others. On this National Day of Mourning, our students will have the opportunity to learn about the 39th President of the United States, reflecting on his contributions to our nation and his tireless humanitarian efforts."

School district transportation services will operate as usual for students residing on Eglin Air Force Base, ensuring uninterrupted school access on and off base. In accordance with Governor Ron DeSantis’ direction, the United States and the State of Florida flags will be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds across Florida in honor of President Carter. This tribute will remain in effect until sunset on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025.
