Okaloosa County School District Celebrates Coach Matt Brunson’s Induction into the FHSAA Hall of Fame



The Okaloosa County School District proudly congratulates Baker School Head Football Coach Matt Brunson on his induction into the prestigious Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Hall of Fame, recognizing a legendary career defined by excellence, leadership, and lasting impact on high school football in Northwest Florida. Over more than three decades, Coach Brunson has built one of the most respected coaching careers in Florida high school athletics, compiling an outstanding 288–85 record while leading multiple programs to sustained success. His accomplishments include 22 state playoff appearances, 13 district championships, and two state championships, including Baker School’s historic 2020 title, the first football state championship for Okaloosa County in 25 years.
 
A graduate of Baker School, Coach Brunson was part of one of the most dominant eras in Florida high school football history, helping lead Baker to three consecutive state championships from 1983–1985 and contributing to the program’s historic 42-game winning streak. Following a collegiate career at Troy State University, where he earned a National Championship in 1987, Coach Brunson returned home to begin a coaching career that would impact generations of student-athletes across Northwest Florida. Throughout his coaching career, Coach Brunson has served at Baker High School, Vernon High School, and Crestview High School, consistently building championship-caliber programs rooted in character, discipline, accountability, and excellence. Beyond the wins and championships, Coach Brunson’s true legacy is reflected in the countless students he has mentored both on and off the field.
 
Superintendent Marcus Chambers praised Coach Brunson’s impact on students and the community. “Coach Matt Brunson’s induction into the FHSAA Hall of Fame is a tremendous honor and a reflection of the lasting impact he has made on generations of student-athletes throughout Northwest Florida,” said Superintendent Marcus Chambers. “His commitment to excellence, discipline, and leadership has helped shape not only championship football programs, but also young men of character. We are incredibly proud of Coach Brunson and grateful for the legacy he continues to build in Okaloosa County.”
 
Baker School Principal Mike Martello also commended Coach Brunson for his leadership and dedication to Baker School. “Coach Brunson’s legacy at Baker School is truly extraordinary,” said Principal Mike Martello. “He has built a culture rooted in discipline, pride, and excellence, while always placing students first. His passion for Baker, his commitment to our athletes, and the respect he has earned throughout Florida make this Hall of Fame induction incredibly meaningful for our entire community.”
 
Throughout his 32 seasons in Okaloosa County, Coach Brunson has participated in 14 Final Four appearances and 8 State Championship games, a testament to his consistency, longevity, and ability to sustain elite football programs year after year. The Okaloosa County School District proudly celebrates this well-deserved honor and congratulates Coach Matt Brunson on his induction into the FHSAA Hall of Fame.
