Niceville High School Students Gain Real-World Financial Skills Through 4th Annual Reality Check Sim

Approximately 150 Niceville High School students participated yesterday in the Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation’s 4th Annual Reality Check, an immersive, one-day financial literacy simulation designed to equip students with essential real-world money management skills. During the hands-on experience, students stepped into “adult life” by being assigned careers, salaries, and family scenarios. They navigated real-world decision-making as they visited interactive stations representing Housing, Utilities, Insurance, Communications, and more - making virtual payments, building budgets, and learning the importance of financial responsibility and planning.

The event was generously funded by Origin Bank and brought to life through the collaboration of numerous community partners and volunteers committed to student success.

Community partners and contributors included:
Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation, Okaloosa County School District, Doolittle Institute, Modern Technology Solutions, Inc. (MTSI), Okaloosa County Teachers Federal Credit Union, Origin Bank, Eglin Federal Credit Union, United Fidelity, CareerSource Okaloosa Walton, Okaloosa County Tax Collector’s Office, 7th Brew (Niceville location), members of the U.S. Air Force at Hurlburt Field, U.S. Army recruiters, Mike McMain, Alyson Lofe’, Susie Branson, Linda Sumblin, Shawn Grigsby, Mortgage Apex (Albert Sousa), EXP (Josh Legare), and 1st Class Real Estate (Tevan Millette).

Students from Crestview, Choctawhatchee, Laurel Hill, and Fort Walton Beach High Schools have also participated in Reality Check in previous years, reinforcing the program’s districtwide impact in preparing students for life beyond the classroom. “Experiences like Reality Check are invaluable in helping our students understand the real-world responsibilities that come with adulthood,” said Superintendent Marcus Chambers. “We are grateful to our community partners for investing in our students and helping prepare them for future success.” Through initiatives like Reality Check, the Okaloosa County School District and its partners continue their shared commitment to empowering students with the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to thrive beyond graduation.
