Fort Walton Beach High School’s Reese Armstrong Named Okaloosa County’s 2024-2025 Sunshine State Scholar

Okaloosa County School District

The Okaloosa County School District is proud to announce that Reese Armstrong, a Fort Walton Beach High School junior, has been selected as the district’s 2024-2025 Sunshine State Scholar. This prestigious honor is awarded to just over 100 of Florida’s highest-achieving 11th-grade students who plan to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Reese is an exemplary student, excelling academically and in her extracurricular activities. She has been a standout member of the varsity tennis team, golf team, and Symphonic Band since her freshman year.

Her leadership skills have shone brightly as she was named tennis team captain and section leader for the band during her sophomore year. Additionally, she earned a place in the All-County Honors Band, showcasing her exceptional musical talent. Beyond athletics and music, Reese is deeply committed to positively impacting her school community. She serves as a dedicated member of the high school’s Hope Squad, which raises awareness for mental health, and the National Honor Society.

Outside of school, Reese has participated in the National League of Junior Cotillions for five years and mentors younger students in the program. Academically, Reese’s passion for science and biomedical studies is reflected in her impressive 4.59 GPA. She plans to attend a rigorous college after graduation to pursue a career in the medical field, with aspirations of specializing in oncology or pediatrics.

The Sunshine State Scholars program is designed to recognize and celebrate Florida’s top 11th-grade students excelling in STEM disciplines. Selection criteria include academic achievements, commitment to STEM careers, and contributions to schools and communities. Applicants submit an application, an essay outlining their STEM career goals, letters of recommendation, academic transcripts, and a resume. As part of the program, Reese will join other Sunshine State Scholars in Orlando, Florida, in June for a two-day event. The gathering will provide opportunities to connect with STEM employers and network with Florida’s top colleges and universities.

“The Okaloosa County School District is incredibly proud of Reese Armstrong’s accomplishments and her well-deserved recognition as a Sunshine State Scholar,” said Superintendent Marcus Chambers. “Her dedication, leadership, and passion for learning exemplify the excellence we strive for in our schools.”
