Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida proudly announces Vicen'te Thompkins as the recipient of the 2026 Ronald Mobayed Military Big of the Year Award. This honor recognizes a military volunteer whose mentorship has made a lasting impact in the life of a child.
Vicen’te Thompkins has been a dedicated mentor to his Little Brother Jaterryon, since March 2024. From the beginning, the two connected through their shared love of sports, whether watching games together or competing on the basketball court. Their outings are filled with laughter, friendly competition, and, and meaningful conversations about life and the future. Over time, that connection has grown into a strong friendship built on trust and encouragement.
Stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base, Vicen'te serves as a Senior Airman in the battle management field. He brings the same leadership and dedication from his military career into his role as a mentor. Beyond sports and fun activities, the two regularly talk about making good decisions and setting goals for the future. They have worked on homework together and discussed the importance of treating others with kindness and respect.
Vicen'te’s impact extends far beyond his Little Brother. When Jaterryon’s mother, Breshawne McClain, learned that Vicen’te would be receiving this award, she became emotional and shared that no one deserved it more. Her reaction speaks to the profound and lasting difference Vicen’te has made not only in Jaterryon’s life, but within their entire family.
In addition to his commitment as a mentor, Vicen’te has become a strong advocate for Big Brothers Big Sisters throughout the Panama City community. He frequently shares his experience as a Big and encourages others to become mentors. This year, he also participated in a tv interview with WMBB News 13 to help promote mentorship and raise awareness about the organization's mission.
Vicen’te exemplifies the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida, as well as the spirit of Lt. Ronald Joseph Mobayed, this award’s namesake. Lt. Mobayed was an outstanding Big Brother while stationed in Pensacola for flight training in the early 1990s. Tragically, on October 3, 1995, Ron and his crew were killed in the line of duty while responding to a distress signal. This award honors military volunteers who demonstrate the same compassion, leadership, and commitment to their Littles and their community.
On June 10, 2026, staff from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida surprised Vicen'te with the award during a special celebration at History Class Brewing Company. Family members, including his wife, four children, and brother, joined Jaterryon and his mother, along with friends and coworkers, to honor Vicen'te's dedication as a mentor. The gathering highlighted the strong support system surrounding him and the many lives he has touched through his service, leadership, and commitment to mentoring.
On behalf of the staff and Board at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida, we are proud to recognize Vicen’te Thompkins as the recipient of the 2026 Ronald Mobayed Military Big of the Year Award.
