Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida is proud to present Jonathan Kirkland with the prestigious 2025 Okaloosa Big of the Year Award. This annual honor celebrates a mentor who exemplifies dedication, compassion, and the power of positive, one-to-one mentorship.
For nearly three years, Jonathan has been a steadfast Big Brother to his Little Brother Marlon. Together, they've built a special bond over a shared love of movies, food, and strategy games. Whether they're enjoying ice cream or spending hours at the game store, their time together is filled with laughter, learning and meaningful connection.
Jonathan’s impact reaches far beyond fun outings. His consistent support has made a lasting difference in Marlon's life—and in the lives of his entire family.
“Jon is part of our family now. He’s giving, caring, and even a great gardener,” shared Marlon's mother, Timi, reflecting on their relationship.
In addition to being a dedicated mentor, Jonathan serves on our Big Recruiter Committee, helping bring new mentors into the program. His commitment to service is reflected in his nearly 14 years at the Walton County Clerk of Courts, where he’s known for being one of the first to volunteer at community events. He also generously gives his time to organizations such as A Bed 4 Me Foundation and Habitat for Humanity, where he continues to earn praise for his generosity and leadership.
To celebrate this well-deserved recognition, our staff surprised Jonathan at his office at the Walton County Clerk of Courts on July 23 with balloons and sweet treats. He was genuinely surprised and deeply moved by the recognition.
“We are thrilled to recognize Jonathan’s outstanding contributions as a mentor and community leader,” said Paula Shell, CEO and President of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida. “His dedication to Marlon and our community embodies everything this award stands for.”
On behalf of our board and staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida, we offer our deepest gratitude to Jonathan for his commitment to empowering youth and for equipping Marlon with the tools to reach his full potential. It is our privilege to recognize and celebrate him as the 2025 Okaloosa County Big of the Year.
