Pensacola, FL - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida is proud to launch a new initiative in collaboration with Valerie's House Pensacola: "Val's Pals Northwest Florida: A Big Bond for Grieving Hearts." This initiative connects caring adult mentors with children who are grieving the loss of a loved one and need extra support, encouragement, and someone to simply be there through their healing journey.
The Pensacola Chapter of Valerie's House (VHP) and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida have long shared a compassionate partnership, rooted in the common goal of supporting children through life's challenges. Before Valerie's House opened its permanent local location in December 2022, Big Brothers Big Sisters opened the doors of their Pensacola home to allow VHP to host their grief support groups. Since expanding to the area in late 2020, Valerie's House has become a safe and nurturing space where children and families can work through grief together. Its mission is to help families heal and move forward to live fulfilling lives.
"Children facing grief need someone in their corner - a stable, caring adult who can offer comfort, consistency, and hope," said Paula Shell, CEO & President, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida. "Through Val's Pals of Northwest Florida, we aim to provide just that: a Big who will listen, encourage, and walk alongside them through life's hardest moments."
Each participating child will be thoughtfully paired with a mentor who offers companionship and emotional support. In addition to one-on-one mentorship, this initiative provides resources and tools to help children process their grief and build resilience.
"Grief can feel incredibly isolating for a child," said Crista Brandt, NWFL Director, Valerie's House Pensacola. "Having a mentor from Big Brothers Big Sisters through Val's Pals offers these children a powerful reminder that they are seen, valued, and not alone. This program beautifully extends our mission and reflects the strength of our partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters."
Big Brothers Big Sisters is currently seeking adults who are ready to step into this meaningful role. If you feel called to support a grieving child and make a lasting difference, now is the perfect time to get involved. To learn more about becoming a mentor, visit BeTheBig.org.
