Northwest Florida State College Advanced Technology and Applied Sciences Launch Innovative Collaborations

The Advanced Technology and Applied Sciences Department at Northwest Florida State College (NWFSC) has multiple ongoing innovative collaborations that showcase the skills of our students and the capabilities of our CNC fabrication shop. These projects not only provide real-world experience for our students but also serve the local community and environment.

Collaboration with Destin-Fort Walton Beach Natural Resources Team
NWFSC engineering students are working with the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Natural Resources team in Okaloosa County to redesign and fabricate tag applicators used to track fish migration patterns. After completing the redesign phase and obtaining approvals, students will machine functional prototypes, providing hands-on experience with precision engineering and CNC machining.

Future Collaborations with Destin-Fort Walton Beach Natural Resources Team
Tourism in Okaloosa County and the destination of Destin-Fort Walton Beach have provided numerous opportunities for NWFSC and the County to collaborate on projects that benefit student learning and the community. Engineers are currently working with the Natural Resources team on how they can help in the advancement of the County’s robust artificial reef program (destinfwb.com).

“These collaborations give our students the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects that matter,” said Shera Gill, Director of Advanced Technology and Applied Sciences. “From environmental tracking to commemorating historic events, our engineering program prepares students for any challenges while making a tangible impact in our region.”

“At Northwest Florida State College, we are committed to equipping students with the tools, skills and experiences needed to succeed in today’s workforce,” said NWFSC President Mel Ponder. “These collaborations showcase the power of hands-on learning and the immense value of community partnerships. I’m proud of the innovative ways our students are applying their talents to projects that make a lasting impact in Northwest Florida.”

NWFSC invites prospective students to explore the Advanced Technology and Applied Sciences programs and join a dynamic, hands-on learning environment where innovation meets community service.
